April 2013 Newsletter

April, 2013                                                                                      Volume 10    No. 4

Sunday, April 28, 1-5 P.M.

You have received a personal invitation--you have probably seen the publicity--now come see the show!!  See the flyer attached for all the details.  Highlights will include the Regimental Volunteer Band of Wisconsin performing musical selections throughout the afternoon.  The dedication ceremony begins at 1:00.  Beginning about 2:00 p.m. and every 15 minutes later for two hours, there will be a drawing for a door prize.  The prizes range from gift certificates to railroad related books to framed images and an exclusive depot-shaped cake from the Sweet Spot.   Refreshments will be available throughout the afternoon.

The Esterly Seeder is in place and ready to view.  The railroad exhibit includes exciting Milwaukee Road memorabilia lent by the Eagle Historical Society and local collector Brian Zordel. We also have some posters and advertising from the heyday of the Milwaukee Road.

There will be an option to record some oral history during the afternoon, thanks to UW-Whitewater public history students and Alan Luckett from the local cable TV station.  If you have a great story about the depot; come and tell it!

Throughout the depot we will have volunteer sign-up sheets.  Would you like to help the depot be open more hours and work as a docent?  Would you like to work with our artifacts and research materials?  Ellen Penwell will be demonstrating how you can help clean our textile and clothing collection.  The depot is now a pleasant place to volunteer, so we hope you do.

We have some children’s activities and refreshments, including the announcement of the winners of the art contest, so bring the children and grand-children.

Summer Depot Hours

We will keep the depot open on Wednesday afternoons, but would like to resume our Sunday afternoon schedule in the summer.  Also, we would like to be open on Thursday evenings when there are activities in the park.  Please sign-up on one of the volunteer sheets to indicate you wish to be a docent or other volunteer, or call Carol Cartwright at 262-473-6820.

May Annual Meeting

Our May Annual Meeting will be at the end of that month and you will receive another newsletter with an agenda and any important voting issues you might wish to participate in.  We also have election of officers and the following offices are up for renewal:  Vice President, Treasurer, one three-year board member and one two-year board member. If you have any interest in being on the board of directors, please let us know.
